SILVERCEL™ Antimicrobial Alginate Dressing

Overview

SILVERCEL™ Hydro-Alginate Dressing with Silver have a unique composition which creates a favourable environment for effective wound management. The silver fibres kill a broad spectrum of microorganisms associated with the bacterial colonization and infection of wounds.

Clinical results derived from SILVERCEL™ evaluation62, 66 have shown that the product absorbs wound exudate, adapts to the wound bed and is effective in combating wound infection, as well as promoting the formation of new granulation tissue.

SILVERCEL™ dressing offers super absorbency63, 64 and is effective and easy to use. By reducing infection SILVERCEL™ improves the quality of life for both the patient and healthcare professionals.

Clinically proven, SILVERCEL™ goes above and beyond to offer the strength and endurance of powerful wound cleaning.

SILVERCEL™ a closer look

SILVERCEL™ Hydro-Alginate Dressing with Silver is a sterile, non-woven pad composed of a high G (guluronic acid) alginate, carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) and silver coated nylon fibres. This unique composition manages exudate in infected or heavily colonised wounds. The silver fibres combat wound microorganisms, which reduces the bacterial colonization of the wound and inhibits infection - providing a powerful antimicrobial solution.

SILVERCEL™ Hydro-Alginate Antimicrobial Dressing with Silver is intended for use in the management of all moderate to heavily exuding partial and full thickness chronic wounds including: decubitus (pressure) ulcers, venous ulcers, diabetic ulcers, donor sites, traumatic and surgical wounds.

SILVERCEL™ Antimicrobial Alginate Dressing is an effective barrier to bacterial penetration. The barrier functions of the dressing may help to control infection in moderate to heavily exuding partial and full thickness wounds including: pressure ulcers; venous ulcers; diabetic ulcers; donor sites; traumatic and surgical wounds.

SILVERCEL™Super absorbent63, 64. SILVERCEL™ minimises the potential risk of maceration and leakage63, 64. Proven to absorb and retain fluid, even under compression65

Sustained release63, 66, 67. SILVERCEL™ offers a controlled and sustained release of silver ions63, 65. In vitro studies show that the level of silver released from SILVERCEL™ is maintained beyond 36 hours65

High tensile strength 63, 68. SILVERCEL™ maintains its strengthen the moist wound environment, making it easy to remove63, 68

Indications

SILVERCEL™ Antimicrobial Alginate Dressing is an effective barrier to bacterial penetration. The barrier functions of the dressing may help reduce infection in moderate to heavily exuding partial and full-thickness wounds including: pressure ulcers; venous ulcers; diabetic ulcers; donor sites; traumatic and surgical wounds.

SILVERCEL™ Antimicrobial Alginate Dressing is indicated for external use only.

Contraindications

SILVERCEL™ Dressing is not indicated for use on the following:

  • Third-degree burns
  • Patients with a known sensitivity to alginates or silver
  • To control heavy bleeding

How to use

Site Preparation

  • Debride when necessary and irrigate the wound site in accordance with standard protocols.
  • Remove excess solution from surrounding skin

Dressing Selection

  • Select a size of SILVERCEL™ Hydro Alginate Dressing that is slightly larger than the wound.

Dressing Application

  1. Cut (using clean scissors) or fold the dressing to fit the wound.
Loosely pack deep wounds, ensuring the dressing does not overlap the wound margins. As wound conditions improve, and exudate levels decrease, moisten the dressing with normal saline solution prior to application.
  2. Cover and secure SILVERCEL™ Hydro-Alginate Dressing with a non exclusive secondary dressing such as TIELE*/TIELLE* plus Hydropolymer Dressing.

Dressing change and Removal

  • Dressing change frequency will depend on patient condition and the level of exudate. Initially it may be necessary to change the dressing every 24 hours.
  • Reapply SILVERCEL™ Hydro-Alginate Dressing when the secondary has reached its absorbent capacity or whenever good wound care practice dictates that the dressing should be changed.
  • Gently remove the secondary dressing
  • If the wound appears dry, saturate the dressing with normal saline solution prior to removal.
  • Gently remove the dressing from the wound bed and discard.
  • Irrigate the wound site prior to application of a new dressing

Indications

SILVERCEL™ Hydro Alginate Dressing is intended for use in the management of all moderate to heavily exuding partial and full-thickness chronic wounds including: decubitus (pressure ulcers), venous ulcers, diabetic ulcers, donor sites, traumatic and surgical wounds. As the product conatins alginate it may assist in supporting the control of minor bleeding in superficial wounds. It is also suitable for use, under medical supervision, in the management of infected wounds, or wounds in which there is an increased risk of infection.

Contra Indications

SILVERCEL™ Hydro Alginate Dressing is not indicated for use on the following:

  • Surgical Implantation
  • Patients with a known sensitivity to silver

Precautions

SILVERCEL™ Hydro Alginate Dressing is not intended:

  • To control heavy bleeding
  • For direct application on dry/low moisture wounds. As wound conditions improve and exudate levels decrease, it may be preferable to use a non adherent wound contact layer(eg NA-Ultra* or ADAPTIC*) or switch to a more appropriate dressing.

Systemic antimicrobial therapy should be considered when wound infection is evident. SILVERCEL™ Hydro-Alginate Dressing may be used under medical supervision, in conjunction with systemic antibiotics.
